How is a domain expiry date determined?
Every registered domain has a registry expiry date set by the registry (the suffix's authority). The registrar claims the renewal; the registry expiry is the authoritative date when the registration ends unless renewed. Public RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) exposes this date for most TLDs. Where RDAP has no record — the domain may be unregistered, the TLD may not publish it, or network access may be restricted — we show that plainly rather than guessing.
What happens as a domain nears expiry?
- Before expiry: renew on time (most registrars auto-renew; some don't).
- Grace period: a short window after expiry when you can still renew, usually at normal price.
- Redemption period: after grace, the domain enters redemption — recovery is possible but costs more.
- Release/quarantine: if not recovered, the domain is eventually released and may be re-registered by anyone.
